Aspinall Announces Date and Location for Upcoming Bout

Tom Aspinall, the English mixed martial artist, declared himself the new undisputed heavyweight champion on Monday, suggesting Jon Jones has ‘retired’ amidst speculation about their potential matchup.

Discussions surrounding a possible fight between Aspinall and Jones have been ongoing, with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Dana White confirming its likelihood this year.

Jones, after securing the vacant heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023, has only defended the title once against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024.

Aspinall, on the other hand, claimed the interim title by defeating Sergei Pavlovich, during Jones’s injury and subsequently defended it successfully in July 2024.

Over the weekend, Jones stirred excitement among fans by stating that ‘Tom and I agreed to wait for the UFC’ during a seminar held in Thailand.

In response to Jones’s statement during a podcast, Aspinall commented, ‘Jon’s retired’ and affirmed, ‘I’m the undisputed heavyweight champion.’

Aspinall remarked, “Do you guys follow Jon on social media? Neither do I. But he seems to be enjoying life. He’s had an amazing career, as we all know.”

He further stated, “We’re moving forward. I hold the title of undisputed heavyweight champion. I am prepared to face all challengers and revitalize this division.”

Aspinall expressed his frustration, shared by many, regarding the prolonged anticipation for his fight with Jones, noting that the delay has become tiresome for everyone.

He explained, “We have all been waiting for too long, the contenders are getting frustrated, everyone’s getting tired of it, even the fans. Therefore, Jon is retired, and it is time for us to move on.”

Aspinall also disclosed that his next fight has a confirmed date and venue.

“These are thrilling times for the heavyweight division. I have a set date and location. The active heavyweight champion is here, ready to take on all opponents—let’s make it happen,” Aspinall added.

With the UFC schedule booked until September, Aspinall’s next appearance will probably be in October or later.
