Weather Update: Thunderstorms Expected in Karachi and Sindh
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for Karachi, anticipating rain and thunderstorms on July 19, coinciding with the arrival of monsoon winds in most parts of Sindh.
According to the weather service, Karachi is predicted to have partly cloudy and humid conditions on Thursday and Friday. Rainfall is expected to become more intense across different districts of the province.
The department stated that Dadu and Qambar Shahdadkot are likely to experience rain with thunder today (Thursday). Showers are also anticipated tomorrow (Friday) in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin.
The weather system is projected to bring more widespread rainfall on July 19, with thunderstorms forecasted for Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, and Hyderabad.
Rainfall is also expected in Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal on the same day.
Meanwhile, significant monsoon rainfall has caused destruction in various areas of Punjab, resulting in at least 43 fatalities in the last 24 hours and triggering urban flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
A spokesperson for the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) mentioned that the authority’s managing director has contacted the Pakistan Army’s 111 Brigade. A decision has been made to involve the army in case of an emergency.
With the PMD forecasting further heavy rainfall, sirens have been activated in areas surrounding Nullah Leh as the water level has increased by 22 feet, prompting the Met Office to issue evacuation advisories.
As of now, Saidpur has recorded 53mm of rainfall, 77mm in Golra, 95mm in Bokra, 67mm in Shamsabad, 105mm in Kachehri, 90mm in Pirwadhai and Gowalmandi, and 80mm in Katarian.
A cloud burst was observed in Chakwal, leading to a substantial 423mm of rain.
Sheikhupura and its surrounding regions have also been heavily affected by rainfall, with measurements reaching up to 217mm.
