Extensive Flooding Hits Bahawalnagar as Sutlej River Overflows

Bahawalnagar and adjacent regions in Punjab are grappling with widespread inundation following the Sutlej River’s overflow, which has submerged numerous villages and led to the displacement of thousands of inhabitants.

The administration has established aid centers in the districts impacted by the deluge; however, a significant number of individuals, notably including children, are still awaiting prompt evacuation support.

Pakistan is contending with intense monsoon downpours that have triggered abrupt floods, increased river volumes, and filled reservoirs, resulting in over 800 reported casualties since the end of June. Amid the downpours, India discharged surplus water from its dams earlier in the week, elevating river levels downstream in Punjab.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that Pakistan evacuated over 210,000 villagers situated near the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers, all of which originate in India.

Punjab, the most populous province in the nation, is encountering some of the most severe flooding observed in recent times, with rivers experiencing high flows and extensive areas of farmland now submerged.

In Bahawalnagar, a district of approximately 3 million people, several communities have been inundated by floodwaters, compelling families to evacuate with assistance from Rescue 1122 teams.

Watercraft transporting household goods were observed navigating through the flooded areas, while numerous residents made independent attempts to relocate their possessions to higher ground.

Those displaced are finding temporary lodging in aid camps or seeking shelter with family members.

Reports indicate that governmental aid remains inadequate, and numerous families are stranded without access to sustenance, housing, or healthcare.

Agricultural lands, yields, and livestock have also suffered substantially, exacerbating the crisis, and the floodwaters have rendered crucial connecting roads impassable, isolating numerous villages.

The complete magnitude of the devastation to lives, properties, and agricultural assets will become more evident as the water recedes; however, both authorities and locals characterize the situation as among the most catastrophic flood emergencies to impact the region in recent years.

Authorities have cautioned that the flooding surge, currently progressing downstream from Bahawalnagar and Minchinabad, is projected to move toward Head Islam – a crucial water management structure on the Sutlej River – and Panjnad – a river situated at the district’s periphery – in the days ahead.
