Agu Facing Likely Absence from Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Due to Injury

Nigerian midfielder Felix Agu underwent a successful surgical procedure on Wednesday to address a syndesmosis ligament injury. This injury occurred last week during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 victory against St. Pauli.

The 26-year-old Agu had been named to the Nigerian team for the most recent FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against Lesotho and Benin. Due to his talent, he was expected to be the starting left-back ahead of Brono Onyemaechi, but the injury has made him unavailable.

According to reports, the injury is expected to sideline him for a number of months, raising the possibility that he will be unable to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025.

Werder Bremen has not yet announced Agu’s precise return date, making it unclear when he will be back in action. However, it typically takes three to six months to recover completely from this kind of injury.

Agu finalized his international transfer and received FIFA clearance prior to his setback, following his two appearances for Germany’s U21 team in 2019.

During the Unity Cup in London, he made his Super Eagles debut, playing 83 minutes in the final. Nigeria drew 2-2 with Jamaica in that game before prevailing in a penalty shootout.

Agu’s career achievements include winning the 3. Liga title with VfL Osnabruck, making his Bundesliga debut for Werder Bremen, recording his first league goal and assist, and earning two under-21 caps for Germany.

His performance in Werder Bremen’s 4-0 victory over M’gladbach, when he made a crucial defensive play, is another noteworthy memory.

It’s also important to remember that Agu has a history of injury issues, so the club will be cautious about pushing him back too soon.

The Bundesliga will also take a month-long break in the second week of December. Even if Agu is able to return in December, this means he won’t have any competitive matches to play.
