Australia to Host Sri Lanka A Series in Darwin

Cricket Australia (CA) has revealed that Darwin will be the location for the forthcoming Sri Lanka A series, with the first match scheduled for July 4. This event signifies the return of premier cricket to the area after nearly two decades.

The anticipated return of red-ball cricket to Darwin marks the first time since 2006 that the city has hosted such matches. Previous contests included Australia A against Pakistan A, and India A versus New Zealand A.

The tour encompasses three 50-over matches alongside two four-day games. The opening first-class match will unfold on a drop-in pitch at Marrara Stadium, which is also prepared to stage two T20 Internationals between Australia and South Africa in August.

CA regards this series as crucial for the revitalization of cricket in Darwin and as an assessment of the venue’s suitability for future international competitions.

Notably, Marrara is under consideration to host one of the two Test matches against Bangladesh in 2026. This adjustment accommodates the 150th anniversary Ashes Test at the MCG, moved from its initially planned March 2027 timeframe.

Peter Roach, CA’s Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling, expressed his enthusiasm for the announcement, emphasizing its importance for nurturing talent and offering cricket opportunities throughout the year within the country.

Roach stated, “Confirming a multi-format series is fantastic, as it provides the upcoming generation of cricketers with exceptional opportunities for development during the Australian winter.”

He added, “Darwin’s dry season, spanning from May to September, presents both the Northern Territory and Australian Cricket with a remarkable winter prospect, enabling cricket to be played in Australia throughout the year.”
