Markram and Bavuma to Lead South Africa in Australia White-Ball Tour
JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) revealed Thursday that Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma will spearhead the national squad during the upcoming white-ball series in Australia this August.
Bavuma, sidelined since South Africa’s World Test Championship victory at Lord’s in June due to a hamstring injury, will take the reins as captain of the ODI team.
Markram, who was given rest during the recent tour of Zimbabwe, will reassume his leadership role in the T20I format.
South Africa’s head coach, Shukri Conrad, expressed his satisfaction with the return of these experienced players to the squad ahead of the Australia tour, emphasizing how crucial their presence is for the team as they gear up for future global competitions.
“It’s fantastic to have our seasoned players back in the fold following their rest after the WTC Final,” remarked Shukri Conrad, the head coach.
“Their expertise and high caliber significantly bolster the group as we aim to solidify a robust core in both formats. Each series from this point forward will play a role in shaping our squads for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year and the 2027 ODI World Cup on our home soil,” he added.
CSA also introduced off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen to the ODI and T20I squads for the first time, following his recent Test debut in Zimbabwe and an impressive domestic season where he led the Dolphins to victory in the One-Day Cup in March.
Power-hitter Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who made a strong impression in the T20 circuit and debuted in both Test and T20I matches during the Zimbabwe tour, has earned his inaugural ODI selection.
Dewald Brevis, another rising star who participated in all three formats in Zimbabwe, is part of both white-ball squads.
Key players such as Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Corbin Bosch, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi, and Kagiso Rabada are included in both squads, highlighting South Africa’s commitment to strengthening their white-ball options ahead of major ICC tournaments.
The Proteas are scheduled to play three T20Is on August 10, 12, and 16, followed by three ODIs on August 19, 22, and 24 in Australia.
