Sinner to Retain Top Ranking Ahead of Rome Masters Return

Jannik Sinner has maintained his world number one position as he prepares to return to competition following a three-month suspension. The Italian tennis star anticipates a challenging comeback at the Rome Masters next month.

Having been sidelined since his Australian Open victory earlier in the season, Sinner accepted a ban in February. This followed an agreement with the global anti-doping authority, which contested an earlier ruling that had cleared him after he had two positive doping tests.

The 23-year-old was authorized to resume training on April 13, with his suspension set to conclude on May 4. He is scheduled to make his competitive comeback at the Italian Open, commencing three days later.

Sinner, who dedicated his time to enhancing his physical condition with the French Open in mind, was assured of keeping his top ranking for his home tournament. This was secured after Alexander Zverev, his closest competitor, suffered an unexpected early exit in Monte Carlo.

“Our training regimen is intense. The hope is to regain momentum as we approach the clay season. It’s certainly not going to be a walk in the park for me,” Sinner commented to a news outlet.

“The initial matches will pose a significant challenge. My objective is to rediscover my rhythm, and then we’ll evaluate the situation.”

Sinner, who recently practiced with Jack Draper, the world number six from Britain, at a tennis club in France, noted several advantages from his enforced absence from the tour.

“Initially, the three-month break was quite welcome,” Sinner stated.

“It provided some respite from the constant demands of the sport, allowing me to spend quality time with family and friends. I engaged in new experiences and gained deeper self-awareness, which helped me understand my current standing.”

“I believe it was highly beneficial for me.”
