Sindh Schools to Close for Chehlum
The Sindh government has declared that all public and private educational institutions operating under the School Education and Literacy Department will be closed on August 15, 2025 (20th Safar 1447 AH) to observe Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).
According to an announcement released on August 8, this decision was formalized during a meeting by the Sub-Committee of the Steering Committee held on November 28, 2025.
The province-wide school closure mandates that the order be disseminated to all educational institutions for immediate implementation.
Chehlum, commemorating the 40th day following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), occurs just after Pakistan’s Independence Day festivities.
This year, these events are anticipated to create an extended holiday period, with August 14 already designated as a national public holiday, and provincial governments authorized to declare Chehlum as a holiday.
In 2024, Sindh also announced a Chehlum holiday for educational institutions. Should other provinces follow suit, this could result in a longer break nationwide.
In related news, the Punjab School Education Department has extended summer vacations until September 1 for all schools, both public and private, postponing the original reopening date of August 14. Schools in Sindh had previously reopened on July 31, after their summer break concluded.
