Karachi Court Remands Truck Driver in Fatal Accident Case
A local court in Karachi has ordered a dumper truck driver to be held in police custody for two days. This order is connected to a case involving the deaths of two siblings who were struck on Rashid Minhas Road.
The tragic incident occurred early Sunday when a speeding dumper truck hit the siblings, resulting in their deaths and injuries to their father. The event triggered public unrest and demonstrations across Karachi. The deceased were identified as 22-year-old Mahnoor and 14-year-old Ahmed Raza.
Following the accident, local residents reportedly attacked the truck driver before authorities took him into custody. Furthermore, an angry crowd reportedly set ablaze at least seven dumper trucks in different areas.
During the court session, police presented the truck driver before the judicial magistrate (central).
The investigating officer (IO) informed the court that the suspect did not possess the required license for heavy vehicles. The IO stated that the suspect only held an LTV (Light Transport Vehicle) license, which had expired in 2016.
The IO also mentioned the need to obtain details about the dumper truck’s owner from the suspect, leading to the request for physical remand.
Consequently, the court granted a two-day physical remand to the police, and the hearing was then adjourned.
Preliminary reports from the traffic police indicate that the dumper truck was traveling at a high rate of speed in the fast lane when the accident took place.
The report also mentioned that the victims’ motorcycle may have skidded, possibly after a minor collision with another nearby vehicle.
The report noted that the road surface was slick from light rain at the time of the accident. It further stated that the siblings were thrown from their motorcycle due to the instability, and subsequently struck by the approaching dumper truck.
