Rabada’s Absence Explained by Gill After Provisional Suspension
NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans’ captain, Shubman Gill, addressed why South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was not included in the playing XI for their IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, even though he had rejoined the team.
Rabada has recently rejoined the Titans following a provisional suspension for using a recreational substance. While he is now eligible to play, Gill clarified that Rabada isn’t quite ready for match conditions.
Gill’s Statement
Gill stated, “He has returned in good time; however, we felt he requires additional practice sessions to regain his form. It’s crucial for him to recover his rhythm and achieve match fitness before participating in competitive play.”
The Gujarat Titans officially welcomed Rabada back, mentioning that the fast bowler “accepted accountability and regrets his error” after being suspended by Cricket South Africa.
Team’s Perspective
The statement emphasized how Rabada cooperated during the disciplinary process, acknowledging the incident’s gravity.
The 28-year-old Rabada voiced his regret, saying he was “deeply sorry” for what happened. His apology highlighted his personal responsibility and commitment to progress positively.
This season, Rabada has played in only a pair of games but is anticipated to be crucial in Gujarat’s efforts as they strive for a playoff spot. Currently, the team is fourth in the IPL points standings, with four league matches left.
His comeback also holds importance for South Africa, with Rabada expected to spearhead their bowling attack during the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia, which will commence on June 11, 2025, at Lord’s.
Rabada, a prominent fast bowler for South Africa, has secured 327 wickets across 70 Tests and remains a significant player in the Proteas’ strategies for the major showdown.
