Shoaib Malik Steps Down as Mentor Amidst PCB Changes
Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik has formally announced his departure from the mentorship role for domestic teams and the Champions Cup.
Malik shared a statement via his social media channels, conveying his appreciation to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the chance to contribute to the domestic cricket structure.
He revealed that his resignation was submitted two weeks prior, explaining that he faced difficulties in balancing his various professional and personal commitments.
“I officially informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) two weeks ago about my decision to resign from my position as a mentor for domestic cricket, and I submitted my formal resignation,” Malik stated.
“This decision was not made lightly. After careful thought regarding my responsibilities, I concluded that managing numerous commitments would hinder my ability to perform optimally—both for Pakistan cricket and my other professional and personal priorities. To ensure fairness for everyone involved, I believe that now is the appropriate time to transition,” he added.
The seasoned all-rounder affirmed his commitment to fulfilling his existing contractual obligations to facilitate a seamless handover and allow the PCB sufficient time to appoint a replacement before the next domestic season.
He also thanked PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Champions Events Director Wahab Riaz, the PCB administration, and his fellow coaching staff. Malik specifically acknowledged the players he mentored, describing the experience as “deeply rewarding.”
“I will uphold my contractual duties as scheduled, providing the PCB adequate time to assign a new Mentor well in advance of the upcoming season,” he stated.
I extend my sincere gratitude to PCB Chairman Mr. Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB executive team, my former teammate and Director of Champions Events Wahab Riaz, my coaching staff at the Stallions, and especially the players who entrusted me with the opportunity to impart my knowledge.”
“I wish the PCB and all those involved ongoing success. Cricket is an integral part of me, and I remain dedicated to supporting Pakistan’s cricketing future in any way I can,” he concluded.
Earlier in the day, reports surfaced indicating that the PCB had chosen to discontinue the services of all five mentors who were appointed for the Champions Cup last year.
According to sources, this decision—reportedly led by Chairman Mohsin Naqvi—is part of a wider strategic realignment in preparation for future domestic and international cricket competitions.
The five mentors affected by this restructuring are Saqlain Mushtaq, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Shoaib Malik. They were originally appointed in August 2024 with three-year contracts.
