Prime Minister Sharif Heads to Egypt for Peace Summit
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has traveled to Egypt to participate in the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit and the signing of the Gaza peace agreement. This agreement aims to resolve the existing humanitarian and security challenges in the Gaza Strip.
The Prime Minister’s visit comes at the joint invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, who will jointly preside over the high-level summit on Monday.
According to the Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with other high-ranking ministers, are accompanying the Prime Minister on this trip.
The Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, also known as the Gaza peace agreement signing ceremony, represents the high point of intense diplomatic efforts that commenced last month during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Pakistan, along with Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Indonesia, and Turkiye, has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at securing a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza.
On September 23, Prime Minister Shehbaz attended a summit-level meeting on Gaza, chaired by President Trump, where leaders from Arab and Islamic nations welcomed the U.S. President’s initiative to bring an end to the conflict.
In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Prime Minister’s participation in the summit demonstrates Pakistan’s consistent and firm support for the Palestinian people and their entitlement to self-determination.
“Pakistan expresses hope that the upcoming summit will facilitate a complete Israeli withdrawal, ensure the protection of Palestinian civilians, put an end to displacement, and enable the reconstruction of Gaza,” the statement noted.
It further stated that Pakistan remains committed to supporting “a credible political process aimed at establishing an independent, viable, and contiguous State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders, consistent with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
The Sharm El-Sheikh Summit is anticipated to conclude with the formal signing of a peace accord, marking a pivotal stride toward stability in the Middle East following two years of conflict in Gaza.
