PM Sharif Discusses Middle East Situation with Iranian President

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday. Their discussion centered on the escalating situation in the Middle East, with both leaders underscoring the importance of finding a peaceful resolution through discourse and diplomatic channels.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Shehbaz conveyed Pakistan’s serious apprehensions regarding the ongoing regional events and “highlighted the pressing need to restore stability through diplomatic efforts.”

During their conversation, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering backing for Iran across various international platforms, notably the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The PMO also noted that he emphasized the critical nature of upholding international legal standards and the principles outlined in the UN Charter.

President Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude to PM Shehbaz for his support and lauded Pakistan’s consistent and principled stance in support of Iran during this crisis.

Furthermore, he recognized Islamabad’s valuable contribution to fostering peace and preventing further intensification of conflict within the region.

Both leaders concurred on the necessity of Muslim world unity to tackle current geopolitical challenges. They also committed to maintaining close communication and cooperation moving forward, as stated in the official release.

Reports indicate that former US President Donald Trump announced a “complete and total ceasefire” between Israel and Iran; however, its validity remains uncertain. Tel Aviv has alleged that Tehran conducted missile attacks in violation of the agreed truce.

Despite reported violations, the former US president deemed the truce effective after addressing both Israel and Iran regarding these breaches.

A statement from the Israel PM’s office indicated a cessation of further strikes on Iran following President Trump’s intervention. Meanwhile, Iran’s top security organization asserted that a ‘strong military response compelled the Israeli regime to unilaterally cease its aggression’.

Trump’s announcement came after Iran initiated a limited missile strike on a US military base in Qatar in response to the American bombing of its nuclear facilities.

Nations including Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia have welcomed the ceasefire announcement following 12 days of conflict between the Middle Eastern rivals.
