Shakib Al Hasan Joins Lahore Qalandars as Replacement for Injured Daryl Mitchell
Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has conveyed his enthusiasm about joining Lahore Qalandars, the two-time champions, for the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, which are scheduled from May 17 to 25.
The franchise officially declared the signing of Shakib on Thursday, confirming that the seasoned all-rounder has been brought in to substitute Daryl Mitchell from New Zealand.
Mitchell suffered a hand injury during Qalandars’ defeat at home against Karachi Kings on May 4, which has sidelined him for the rest of the season.
“Bangladesh’s prominent all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is now part of Lahore Qalandars. He is replacing Daryl Mitchell, who was ruled out due to a hand injury sustained during our home game against Karachi,” the team announced.
Despite Shakib going unsold in the PSL 10 player draft earlier this year, it was reported that Qalandars had considered him for a potential inclusion mid-season.
Sharing his perspective on this opportunity, Shakib stated:
Expressing his excitement about joining the team, Shakib Al Hasan commented, “I’m very pleased to be joining Lahore Qalandars for this PSL season. We are at a critical point in the competition where each match is significant,” said Shakib.
“I’ve always enjoyed watching this tournament, and I’m now eager to contribute on the field. The Qalandars have fantastic supporters and a strong team dynamic, and I’m excited to be a part of the team as we aim for a strong finish,” he added.
The former all-rounder is familiar with the PSL, having represented Karachi Kings in the inaugural season in 2016. He also played for Peshawar Zalmi in 2023, participating in just one match that season.
In total, he has played 14 PSL games, scoring 181 runs at an average of 16.45, including one half-century. As a left-arm spinner, he has taken eight wickets in 12 innings, with his best figures being 2/14.
His most recent competitive appearance was in November 2024, representing the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Shakib’s arrival is timely for Lahore Qalandars, who are still in contention for a playoff spot in PSL 10.
Currently in fourth place with nine points from nine matches, the Qalandars need to win their final league game against Peshawar Zalmi, who are in fifth place, to maintain their playoff aspirations.
