Afridi Backs Malik, Says Performance Matters Most

LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi conveyed his support on Sunday for Shoaib Malik’s potential role as a player for Quetta Gladiators in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

Speaking to the media, Afridi described Malik as a ‘fit player,’ suggesting that his participation should continue as long as his performance remains strong.

He elaborated that franchise leadership considers multiple elements when choosing players, and an experienced player like Malik can be advantageous for both the team and its captain.

“Malik has been actively involved in cricket, and I have frequently observed him in practice. While it’s not essential for Malik to participate in every match, he undoubtedly warrants a spot if he maintains a high level of performance,” Afridi commented.

Referring to Malik’s situation, Afridi drew a comparison to his own career, noting that despite perceptions of his continued fitness, he has no plans to resume playing cricket.

“I extended my cricket career beyond my initial expectations, and a comeback is now out of the question,” he remarked lightheartedly.

Afridi also stated he was not interested in coaching the Pakistan men’s cricket team, clarifying his preference to contribute at the grassroots level rather than taking on a coaching position with the national team.

“If you wish to utilize my skills, assign me to grassroots cricket where genuine development occurs,” he suggested.

“Currently, players are still learning foundational aspects after joining the national team, which ideally should not be the case,” he added.

Shahid Afridi also voiced disapproval of Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, for publicly stating that his authority as captain is limited, stressing that such remarks should not be aired to the media.

“Why did Rizwan not voice such opinions after securing series victories against South Africa and Australia, instead raising them only after experiencing defeats?” Afridi questioned.

“It’s inappropriate for a leader to make such statements publicly or through the media,” he asserted.
