Mirza Optimistic About Team’s Preparation for Tri-Series
DUBAI: Pakistan’s left-arm bowler Salman Mirza conveyed his assurance in the squad’s readiness for the forthcoming tri-series in Dubai, which includes Afghanistan and the UAE. He made these remarks during a press conference following a training session on Sunday.
Mirza commented on the training camp and warm-up matches, noting that the atmosphere has greatly assisted the team’s preparation.
“Alhamdulillah, the practice drills are progressing effectively. We had a training session and then participated in a match. This presents a valuable chance to assess the general circumstances, adjust to the environment, and acclimate ourselves, which will significantly benefit us,” Mirza stated.
The 31-year-old also addressed his function in the team, clarifying that he does not see himself as a genuine all-rounder.
“I don’t view myself as a complete all-rounder. While I can contribute with the bat to some degree, I wouldn’t define myself as a proper all-rounder. Certainly, if the situation necessitates it and you are at the crease, you must see it through,” he explained.
“Even though I couldn’t quite finish the practice match, it remained my responsibility. If such a scenario arises in actual matches, I need to be capable of managing it,” he added.
He also shared his insights on Pakistan’s new T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, praising his leadership abilities.
“Salman Agha is a composed and upbeat individual. Even when facing challenges, he refrains from pressuring anyone. He addresses concerns later and resolves them,” he remarked.
“The positive aspect is that this is a youthful team participating in the Asia Cup. Every captain starts somewhere, and despite this being his initial assignment, we hold strong hopes for favorable outcomes,” he further commented.
When questioned about the anticipated Pakistan versus India match in the upcoming Asia Cup, Mirza highlighted the significance of treating every opponent with equal seriousness.
“I don’t think it significantly alters our approach. Participating in these high-pressure contests is precisely how you develop as a player. Furthermore, there are other formidable opponents aside from India. We are thoroughly preparing for them as well,” he stated.
“Without a doubt, matches against India carry great importance, but our preparations are progressing well, and, Insha’Allah, we will see positive results,” he included.
Looking forward to the tri-series, he anticipates competitive matches, considering the familiar conditions for all three teams.
“The matches will be intense and competitive because the conditions are similar to home for both teams. Afghanistan has been playing their matches there, and the UAE is essentially at home. Therefore, it will be an excellent competition and a great opportunity for everyone to gear up for the Asia Cup,” he concluded.
The tri-nation T20I series, relocated from Pakistan to the UAE, is scheduled from August 29 to September 7, with Pakistan playing Afghanistan in the opening match.
The event is a vital preparation for the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025, planned in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28.
The Asia Cup will commence with a match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9.
Pakistan will begin their campaign against Oman on September 12, followed by a match against India on September 14. Their final group-stage match is scheduled against the UAE on September 17.
Pakistan was initially scheduled to host Afghanistan for a bilateral T20I series in August, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) proposed expanding it into a tri-series and moving it to the UAE to provide enhanced preparation for the Asia Cup.
