PHF Expected to Confirm National Team’s Participation in FIH Pro League Soon
Sources indicate that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is on the verge of confirming the national team’s participation in the FIH Pro League. This development follows the Federal Government of Pakistan’s approval of a Rs250 million budget for the team’s involvement in the league.
The government has reportedly allocated a total of Rs400 million to the sports federation. A significant portion, Rs250 million, has been earmarked for the PHF to ensure the national hockey team competes in the Pro League.
The remaining funds have been designated for hosting the inaugural National Youth Games, which are scheduled to take place in Islamabad.
With the financial backing secured, the PHF is anticipated to communicate its confirmation to the International Hockey Federation (FIH) regarding the national team’s availability for the Pro League shortly, according to sources.
Last month, the primary hockey organization officially invited the Pakistan men’s team to take part in the Pro League. This invitation was extended after New Zealand withdrew from the tournament, despite their victory in the Nations Cup.
The PHF was initially given until August 12 to inform the organization of their decision to accept or decline the invitation. However, the PHF requested an extension as discussions with the government were still in progress.
Earlier this month, PHF President Tariq Bugti stated, “Discussions with the government regarding the Pro League are progressing, and positive developments are expected soon.”
He further mentioned, “While the FIH had set a deadline of August 12 for a response, we have requested an extension until August 20.”
The PHF President also expressed the view that participation in the Pro League would offer valuable exposure to the national team. He revealed that the federation had submitted a budget of PKR 350 million to the government for approval.
