Rizwan Explains Shift Away From Wicketkeeping
Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Multan Sultans, has clarified his choice to relinquish wicketkeeping duties during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10. He mentioned a desire to maintain closer proximity to his teammates on the field as the primary reason for the decision.
In a post-game discussion, Rizwan shared that this adjustment is a deliberate tactic aimed at improving communication and fostering greater enthusiasm among the team during matches.
“My aim was to be nearer to the fielders, enabling direct communication and boosting their morale,” Rizwan stated.
Rizwan highlighted that the team’s bowling lineup includes some players who are relatively new to the professional arena, especially considering the intense environment of the PSL.
He noted that individuals like Ubaid Shah lack the extensive experience possessed by some of the more established bowlers.
“Our bowling unit features several emerging talents, such as Ubaid Shah and Akif Javed.
“I intend to offer them guidance throughout the game, comprehend their thought processes, and assist them in maintaining composure.”
Rizwan stressed that by not being encumbered with the gloves, he is free to move around more and engage with his fellow players, which he sees as essential for boosting team spirit and unity.
“Without the responsibility of keeping, I can continuously move around, encouraging the team—which builds momentum,” he commented with a smile.
Usman Khan has stepped into the role of wicketkeeper and has made a significant impact both behind the stumps and with his batting performances.
Rizwan praised Usman’s contributions, particularly in the crucial number three batting position.
“Usman Khan has been vital in establishing momentum in our innings. His aggressive approach when he comes in at one-down ensures our batting maintains a consistent flow,” Rizwan remarked, expressing his confidence in the young wicketkeeper-batsman.
Despite this strategic adjustment, Multan Sultans have encountered challenges in the competition thus far.
They have only secured one victory in their initial four games, positioning them at the bottom of the standings with a mere two points.
Rizwan openly acknowledged that subpar fielding has significantly contributed to the team’s disappointing performance.
“Our fielding has been inadequate in the past three games. Missed catches and errors have cost us critical opportunities, leading to unfavorable outcomes,” he admitted.
