Ruling Alliance Strengthens Hold in National Assembly
Following an official announcement by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the governing coalition in the National Assembly has solidified its majority, expanding from 218 to 235 members.
This increase reflects the distribution of reserved seats specifically designated for women and minority representatives.
Party-Wise Breakdown
- PML-N: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has seen its representation in the NA grow from 110 to 123 seats. This includes 86 general seats, 32 reserved women’s seats (an increase of 12), and five minority seats (up from four).
- PPP: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) now holds 74 seats, up from 70. This comprises 55 general seats, 16 reserved women’s seats (an increase of three), and three minority seats (an increase of one).
- MQM-P: The Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) currently has 22 seats, consisting of 17 general seats, four reserved women’s seats, and one minority seat.
- PML-Q: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) holds a total of five seats, including four general seats and one minority seat.
- IPP: The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) possesses four seats, with three general seats and one reserved for women.
Other Parties
The PML-Z, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), and National Party each hold one general seat. Four independent members are also aligned with the treasury benches.
Opposition Numbers
The opposition’s overall strength has slightly increased from 96 to 98 members. The Sunni Ittehad Council, supported by PTI, maintains 80 general seats. The opposition also includes five independent members. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) now holds 10 seats, an increase from eight, with six general seats, three women’s seats (an increase of one), and one minority seat.
The opposition benches also include one seat each held by the BNP, Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen, and PkMAP.
Seat Restorations
A total of 19 seats, including three reserved for minorities, have been reinstated in the Assembly. Of these, the PML-N received 12 women’s seats and one minority seat, the PPP secured three women’s seats and one minority seat, and the JUI-F obtained one seat each for women and minorities.
However, in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling and an objection raised by JUI-F, Sadaf Ehsan’s seat was not reinstated. Similarly, Sobia Shahid and Shehla Bano of the PML-N were not reinstated because they had already been sworn in as members of the KP Assembly.
