WWE Acquires AAA Talent, Alberto Del Rio Returns
Former World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio has made his comeback to WWE as the company revamps the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide lineup following its acquisition during WrestleMania 41 weekend.
With the landmark agreement between WWE and AAA expected to be completed later this year, WWE has already started making significant changes to the promotion’s direction.
According to Super Luchas Editor-in-Chief Ernesto Ocamo, WWE has enlisted various top-tier AAA performers.
In addition to Del Rio, the roster now includes names such as El Hijo del Vikingo, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner, La Parka, Lady Maravilla, Niño Hamburguesa, Lady Flammer, and La Hiedra, signifying a new chapter for the Mexican promotion under WWE’s guidance.
This event marks Del Rio’s first engagement with WWE in almost nine years.
The 47-year-old, recognized as “The Pride of Mexico,” previously had two successful periods with WWE, where he achieved numerous accolades, including four World Championships, two United States Championships, a Money in the Bank victory, and a Royal Rumble win. He holds the distinction of being the first Mexican-born world champion in WWE history.
The 47-year-old, who recently secured the AAA Mega Championship for the second time, now seeks to replicate his prior achievements in Mexico through this new WWE-AAA partnership.
WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long recently commented on Del Rio’s potential return to WWE, praising him for overcoming challenges.
“Well, you never say never. It’s just that simple, you know what I mean? Like I said, I had a chance to work with him, nice guy, great guy, great attitude and everything, so I think, you know, he had a few demons,” Long stated.
“We’ve all had them. So I think that he’s pretty much got his life straightened out, and I think if they did brought him back, he’d be a great hand to them,” he added.
Del Rio’s last WWE appearance was at Hell in a Cell 2015, where he surprised fans by ending John Cena’s U.S. Title reign on his initial night back, highlighting his ability to succeed under pressure.
