Alonso Expected to Join Madrid in June

According to international media outlets, Real Madrid, a five-time champion, is eager to secure Xabi Alonso’s services before the Club World Cup, which is slated to begin on June 15.

Reports indicate that Alonso, 43, is poised to sign a three-year contract with Madrid, starting June 1. This move aims to prepare the squad for their inaugural FIFA match against Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18.

Alonso formally announced his departure from Leverkusen during a press conference held on Friday. This marked the end of his nearly three-year stint, a period in which he transformed the club into a formidable contender.

Under his guidance, Leverkusen achieved an undefeated season and secured a domestic double, thereby solidifying Alonso’s reputation as one of Europe’s most promising managerial talents.

Last year, Alonso was rumored to be in discussions with Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich. Ultimately, he chose to remain with Leverkusen.

Although Alonso initially had no plans to join Madrid prematurely, a conversation last week led the club’s management to deem it inappropriate to appoint an interim coach ahead of a permanent appointment.

The current Real manager, Carlo Ancelotti, is anticipated to depart from the club following the final home game of the season against Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu on May 25.

To date, Real has not officially confirmed either Alonso’s arrival or Ancelotti’s departure.

Madrid’s aspirations for LaLiga title defense suffered a setback after a 4-3 loss to Barcelona, the league leaders, on Sunday.
