Call for Reforms in Pakistan Railways and Upgradation of Hyderabad Railway Junction
Muhammad Saleem Memon, President of the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI), has formally requested Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi to implement urgent improvements to Pakistan Railways’ cargo services and modernize the Hyderabad Railway Junction.
Memon underscored the increasing importance of rapid, secure, and economical logistics services amid the rapid expansion of online and e-commerce. He noted that while Pakistan Railways possesses a significant national network, its potential is hindered by persistent mismanagement and outdated facilities.
The HCSTSI President stated that, in spite of providing highly competitive freight rates, Pakistan Railways struggles against private logistics firms due to sluggish service, inadequate operational procedures, and ineffective handling of customer issues. He suggested a public-private partnership model for cargo services, where Pakistan Railways would maintain infrastructure and private companies would oversee operations, enhancing efficiency, dependability, and profitability.
Saleem Memon voiced serious concerns regarding the deteriorated state of the Hyderabad Railway Junction, which serves as a crucial entry point for millions in interior Sindh. He described the station’s current condition as appalling, citing damaged tracks, crumbling platforms, poor sanitation, and unmanned information and complaint desks that severely inconvenience passengers. He also mentioned the shortage of essential amenities and the sale of unsanitary and unsafe food, which present major health risks. He lamented the absence of facilities for accompanying individuals and the lack of suitable accommodations for senior citizens and women, stressing the urgency for government intervention.
The Chamber President proposed transforming the Hyderabad Railway Station into a contemporary commercial center with a dedicated cargo terminal, digitized processes, and passenger amenities meeting international standards. He suggested leasing commercial spaces within the station to reputable brands to boost revenue and foster a cleaner, more appealing atmosphere. He also emphasized the necessity for rigorous quality control in food vending and enhanced hygiene standards throughout the station.
Saleem Memon asserted that Pakistan must take decisive action in this area, emphasizing the country’s rapidly growing e-commerce sector. He believes that with strategic positioning, Pakistan Railways can greatly increase its income and positively impact the national economy.
In conclusion, the HCSTSI President strongly urged the government to commence immediate restoration efforts at the Hyderabad Railway Junction and undertake comprehensive reforms to the railway’s cargo services. These measures aim to restore public confidence, stimulate business activities, and convert Pakistan Railways into a modern and profitable entity. He confirmed the Chamber’s commitment to full cooperation and to offering practical proposals to aid the government’s reform efforts.
