PDMA Warns of Potential Flooding in Punjab Rivers

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a warning on Tuesday regarding possible river flooding. This is due to rainfall in the upper regions of the country, along with anticipated water releases from India in the coming days.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, there is concern that India will discharge water into the Sutlej River in the next two days. A notable rise in water levels has been observed in Indian dams.

The Bhakra, Pong, and Thein dams in India have reached 61%, 76%, and 64% of their full capacities, respectively.

A warning has been issued for a medium to high-level flood in the Chenab River. The PDMA Director General (DG) stated that river and dam conditions are being monitored continuously.

Authorities have cautioned that the water flow in the Sutlej River may increase further.

This announcement follows a flood advisory issued the previous day as the province prepares for the seventh monsoon spell starting August 13.

The approaching monsoon spell is expected to elevate water levels in major rivers like the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum, in addition to adjacent streams and tributaries.

Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and all pertinent departments have been instructed to maintain a state of high readiness, according to the advisory.

The recent monsoon season caused widespread devastation across Pakistan, marked by urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides. These events have resulted in over 300 fatalities, with numerous individuals still missing and significant infrastructural damage.

Gilgit Baltistan, a popular tourist destination, also suffered from flash floods and landslides. Last month, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan reported that at least 10 people died and four were injured in the region due to intense monsoon rains.
