Punjab PDMA Issues Flood Advisory Ahead of Monsoon Spell
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a flood warning as the province prepares for a seventh stretch of monsoon rains, expected to begin on August 13.
The advisory indicates that this new monsoon phase is anticipated to elevate water levels in key rivers like the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum, along with their connected streams.
The PDMA has cautioned about potential inundation in vulnerable low-lying and riverside areas due to the predicted intense rainfall.
Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and all pertinent departments have been directed to maintain a state of heightened readiness, according to the advisory.
Irfan Ali Kathia of Punjab PDMA has urged local administrations to make sure residents and livestock are moved from the riverbanks.
He reminded the general public that engaging in swimming activities in rivers, canals, and other water reservoirs is absolutely forbidden during this emergency situation.
Citizens are encouraged to reach out to PDMA’s helpline at 1129 should they encounter any urgent situation.
The recent monsoon period caused widespread destruction throughout Pakistan, marked by urban flooding, sudden flash floods, and groundslides, resulting in over 300 fatalities, with numerous individuals still unaccounted for and substantial damage to infrastructure.
Gilgit Baltistan, a region known for its tourist destinations, also experienced significant damage from flash floods and landslides. Last month, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan reported that a minimum of 10 individuals lost their lives, and four sustained injuries due to flood incidents triggered by intense monsoon downpours.
Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presented compensation funds to families impacted by the recent floods in Gilgit Baltistan and mandated the swift restoration of damaged infrastructure using a Rs4 billion relief fund.
During his visit to the area, the Prime Minister distributed Rs1 million compensation payments to the families of those who died in the disaster. He offered prayers for the departed and wished for a quick recovery for the injured, stating that his presence was to demonstrate support for the flood victims.
“Pakistan is among the nations most at risk from the effects of climate change,” stated PM Shehbaz during the compensation distribution event.
He advocated for creating an enhanced early warning system to lessen the dangers of future disasters.
