In a recent move to improve road safety, the Punjab government has established a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour for all motorcycles operating within the province. This decision, announced during the 22nd Provincial Cabinet meeting on January 14, 2025, aims to curb the rising number of traffic accidents attributed to speeding motorcyclists.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, stating, “It is tragic that people are losing their lives due to speeding.” She highlighted the government’s commitment to enforcing this regulation strictly to ensure public safety.
The Transport and Mass Transit Department has issued directives to relevant authorities, including the Additional Inspector General of Police (Traffic) and district traffic officers, to ensure strict adherence to the new speed limit. Additionally, the Punjab Emergency Services Department has been tasked with providing fortnightly reports on motorcycle-related accidents to the Chief Minister’s Office for ongoing assessment.
To further promote safer commuting, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has initiated a pilot project to construct dedicated lanes for cyclists and motorcyclists. The first phase includes a 4-kilometer-long bike lane from Kalma Chowk to Lahore Bridge, aiming to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow.
The government plans to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to inform citizens about the new speed regulations and the importance of adhering to them. This initiative reflects the administration’s dedication to fostering a safer travel environment for all road users in Punjab.
