Inquiry Committee Formed to Investigate World University Games Issues
ISLAMABAD: A three-member inquiry committee has been established by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to delve into alleged irregularities surrounding Pakistan’s participation in the World University Games held in Germany. The investigation will also address reports regarding the disappearance of two athletes during the competition.
The investigative body includes PSB Director Noorish Sabah, Nasrullah Rana, and PSB Legal Advisor Saif-ur-Rehman Rao. An official directive has been released, tasking the committee with submitting a comprehensive report within a 15-day timeframe.
According to the PSB, the selection and management processes for the Pakistani contingent at the Games exhibited significant shortcomings and anomalies.
Concerns Over Team Official Selection
Questions have surfaced concerning the selection of team officials. Reports indicate that, with the exception of the swimming coach, the officials primarily consisted of university directors or Higher Education Commission (HEC) personnel.
This composition has triggered unease regarding the transparency and impartiality of the selection standards.
The PSB further disclosed the alleged disappearance of two athletes during the event. Additional issues cited encompassed logistical inadequacies and breaches of discipline.
The inquiry will also examine the disqualification of Pakistan’s women’s relay team and scrutinize an instance where a judo athlete participated without appropriate coaching or attire.
Detailed Investigation Promised
“The committee will thoroughly examine all these matters and present its conclusions within 15 days,” the PSB affirmed in their statement.
The World University Games commenced earlier this month with an opening ceremony in Duisburg, Germany, signifying the commencement of a major international multi-sport event for university athletes.
Pakistani athletes from Lahore College for Women University were among the global participants, proudly representing Pakistan. The Pakistani contingent garnered attention as they paraded in traditional clothing, celebrating the nation’s diverse cultural identity.
National athlete Ummat-ur-Rahman, a student at Lahore College for Women University and a national gold medalist in athletics, led the delegation and carried Pakistan’s flag during the ceremony.
This year, Pakistan has sent 27 athletes to compete in six disciplines: athletics, swimming, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, and archery. Their involvement emphasizes the increasing presence and promise of Pakistani student-athletes in international university sports.
