PHF Faces Financial Crunch Despite Government Funding

Lahore: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is reportedly grappling with serious monetary challenges, even after securing PKR 250 million in government funds for the Pro Hockey League, sources have indicated.

Securing sufficient funds has proven difficult for the federation, which is still working to settle player daily allowances. Sources further stated that the PHF needs an additional PKR 100 million to successfully host a single Pro League edition.

Looking ahead, the national hockey team is slated to participate in significant events, including next year’s World Cup Qualifier, the Asian Champions Trophy, and potentially the World Cup, contingent on qualification.

The team’s schedule also includes competing in the Olympic Qualifiers, the Asian Games, alongside various invitational tournaments and events for junior and age-group teams.

In total, estimates suggest the PHF requires between PKR 300–350 million annually to adequately fund these engagements. This means that a minimum of PKR 450 million must be sourced each year to maintain operational stability.

Sources cautioned that the federation might be compelled to seek further financial aid from the government if it cannot demonstrate its financial viability.

On Wednesday, the federal government sanctioned a PKR 250 million budget earmarked for the national men’s hockey team’s involvement in the FIH Pro League.

This allocation was drawn from a total of PKR 400 million designated for sports federations, ensuring the hockey team’s participation in the league.

Initially, the PHF was given until August 12 to verify its participation in the Pro League. However, the federation requested more time to continue discussions with governmental authorities.

Earlier in the month, PHF President Tariq Bugti stated, “Discussions with the government regarding the Pro League are progressing; positive news is expected shortly.”

He also mentioned, “The FIH initially set an August 12 deadline for confirmation, but we have requested an extension until August 20.”
