Government to Enhance Water Storage Capacity
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Tuesday that the government has decided to increase the country’s water storage capacity in response to India’s alleged intentions to weaponize water resources.
During his visit to the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), the Prime Minister mentioned that the Permanent Court of Arbitration issued a supplementary order, clarifying that India does not have the right to unilaterally revoke the Indus Waters Treaty.
He noted, “The adversary harbors malicious intentions against Pakistan and seeks to undermine the waters treaty.” Consequently, the government has resolved to expedite non-controversial water storage projects under the Water Accord with the provinces, as permitted by legal provisions.
He emphasized the crucial role of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in this endeavor.
The Prime Minister instructed that weather alerts and potential disaster warnings be disseminated regularly via SMS and phone messages through collaboration with the PTA.
In his address, broadcasted on national television, he reflected on the widespread devastation caused by the floods of 2022, which affected the entire nation.
PM Shehbaz lamented that Pakistan is unfortunately among the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters like cloudbursts, despite its minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
He pointed out that Pakistan suffered more than any other nation globally in 2022.
The Prime Minister added that the melting of glaciers due to heat waves necessitates the highest level of readiness.
“The tragic events in Swat, where precious lives were lost, plunged the nation into grief,” he stated, emphasizing the need for an honest evaluation of the incident and the development of a comprehensive strategy with the provinces to prevent future occurrences.
The Prime Minister also called for a report on the matter.
He mentioned that ministers negotiated grants and public-private partnerships to develop resilient infrastructure following the 2022 floods.
Premier Shehbaz commended the NEOC’s facilities and expressed confidence that relevant authorities would utilize this platform to advance the country’s economic and social progress.
He assured the government’s full support in strengthening the institution and building its capabilities.
The Prime Minister lauded the NDMA for its seamless organization of relief operations to Turkiye and Myanmar.
He expressed hope that this advanced facility, connected with the provinces and equipped with an early warning system, would provide real-time information.
During the visit, the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, briefed the Prime Minister on the current monsoon season, flood conditions, and implemented precautionary measures.
