Pakistan Commemorates National Resilience Day on 20th Anniversary of 2005 Earthquake
Marking the 20th anniversary of the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have both reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing national capabilities for disaster risk mitigation and ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.
In their separate statements released on National Resilience Day, both leaders lauded the nation’s collective spirit and fortitude in recovering from the cataclysmic earthquake that struck in 2005.
Pakistan observes October 8 each year as a day to remember the victims of the earthquake that registered a magnitude of 7.6, resulting in the loss of over 87,000 lives on that same date in 2005.
The President stated, “Every year on October 8, we pause to remember the earthquake of 2005, which tragically took the lives of over 80,000 individuals, left numerous others injured, and displaced millions. We also honor those who united in solidarity and faced the consequences of both natural and man-made disasters throughout Pakistan’s history.”
He highlighted that the Pakistan National Disasters Management Authority has established a cutting-edge National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), utilizing advanced technology for effective early warning systems and thorough risk assessment.
“Our national disaster response has become more coordinated and stronger,” the President added.
“From the devastation of the disaster, we have reconstructed schools, hospitals, and homes. We have come to understand that our real strength lies not in avoiding challenges, but in overcoming them through faith, unity, and innovation. As we look to the future, let us build a nation where no disaster can shatter our determination.”
The President also addressed the issue of global carbon emissions, noting that Pakistan, like many other developing nations, continues to suffer a disproportionate impact from its effects.
In his message, PM Shehbaz reflected on the significant loss of life and infrastructure experienced two decades ago, while also recognizing the “unparalleled courage” demonstrated by the people of Pakistan in response to the disaster.
PM Shehbaz stated, “The earthquake of 2005 remains a stark reminder in our memories, a tragedy that reshaped communities and validated the strength, compassion, and resilience of the Pakistani people.”
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the recurring challenges to the nation’s resolve posed by climate-related disasters, citing this year’s severe monsoon floods, which displaced millions and caused widespread destruction across the country.
“Alhamdulillah, we have once again demonstrated our inherent resilience in the face of natural hazards caused by climate change,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to supporting the people during times of crisis.
“Floods, earthquakes, heatwaves, forest fires, droughts, urban flooding, and glacial melts serve as stark reminders of the dangers we face. Building resilience in such a complex environment requires a comprehensive and proactive approach, supported by reliable data, advanced risk assessments, and targeted preparedness efforts,” he stated.
The Prime Minister urged citizens to actively participate in local disaster preparedness initiatives and promoted sustainable practices to lessen future risks and protect vulnerable communities.
