PPP’s Syed Waqar Mehdi Secures Senate Seat in Sindh By-Election

Syed Waqar Mehdi of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged victorious in the by-election held Tuesday for the vacant Senate general seat representing Sindh province.

According to an official statement from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Mehdi received a total of 111 votes. Nighat Mirza of MQM-P secured 36 votes. Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, the Provincial Election Commissioner Sindh and Returning Officer, indicated that two votes were deemed invalid due to improper marking.

Polling took place at the Sindh Assembly continuously from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During the allotted timeframe for voting, a total of 149 votes were tallied.

The Senate seat became available following the passing of PPP Senator Taj Haider.

Sources indicate that the newly elected senator is expected to serve in the upper house until March 2027, completing the term of approximately two years.
