Khawaja Asif Hints at Potential PPP Inclusion in Federal Government

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has indicated the possibility of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) joining the federal government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He suggested that a collaborative effort between the two major political entities could be advantageous for the country’s national objectives.

Speaking on Tuesday, Asif stated, “Having been involved in politics for a considerable period, I believe the chances have significantly increased that an arrangement between both parties, focused on advancing our national agenda, would be beneficial, and I would welcome such a development.”

While clarifying that he could not detail any ongoing negotiations, the senior PML-N figure mentioned that his remarks were grounded in his political acumen rather than privileged information.

“I am unaware of the specifics or progress of any discussions. My response was based on my political assessment,” he explained.

The PPP, while holding constitutional positions such as the presidency and governorships, does not currently have any executive roles within the federal cabinet.

Nevertheless, the party has shown support for the ruling coalition in recent times, notably by endorsing the PML-N-led budget and backing significant legislative efforts in Parliament.

Relations between the two parties also seemed to improve after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to head a delegation to Western nations to challenge India’s stance following a recent dispute between the two nuclear powers.

PPP leader and Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated recently that the party is not presently considering joining the federal government.

He informed reporters in Karachi that no formal invitation has been issued by the PML-N to the PPP to join the government. However, Memon added, “Should such a proposition be put forth in the future, the party might give it consideration.”
