Quaid-i-Azam University Hostels Vacated, Students Arrested

In Islamabad, police apprehended numerous students from Quaid-i-Azam University on Tuesday morning. The arrests followed a raid on a university hostel, prompted by a complaint from the university’s administration.

The university administration oversaw the complete evacuation of hostels 6, 8, 9, and 11. Authorities took approximately 55 to 60 students into custody, transferring them to the Secretariat Police Station.

University Administration’s Explanation

According to the administration, students were previously instructed to vacate the hostels by July 13. This was to allow for maintenance during the summer break.

The administration stated that while many students had already left, those remaining received multiple extensions. Eventually, they were evicted after a final deadline passed.

Police Statement

Islamabad police confirmed they provided assistance at the university administration’s request.

Authorities reported that while students vacated 11 hostels, issues arose with four others. The university alleged some students were residing there illegally.

The police stated that students who resisted the eviction were removed from the hostel, and legal measures would be pursued based on the university’s formal request.

Legal Response and Protest

Human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir stated that around 72 students were detained. She said, “We are scheduled to meet with the vice chancellor to address and resolve these issues,” while speaking outside the police station.

Due to student protests, the Vice Chancellor’s Office has been locked. “The VC Secretariat remains closed due to the ongoing student demonstration,” the university administration confirmed.
