Karachi Braces for Potential Thunderstorm and Wind Gusts
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated that Karachi may experience strong winds coupled with thunderstorm-driven rainfall this evening (Monday), offering a temporary respite from the prevailing hot and humid conditions.
The weather department projects that Karachi will maintain warm and humid conditions over the next day, with temperatures peaking between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius.
The current humidity level is recorded at 43%, accompanied by dry northwesterly winds circulating at 8 km/h. The lowest temperature recorded in the last 24 hours stood at 28°C.
The Met Office previously highlighted expectations for unusually high temperatures across Karachi and other regions of Sindh province.
Consequently, the city has been experiencing intense heat, notably between 11 AM and 4 PM.
Authorities are urging residents to limit outdoor activities during these hours to minimize the risk of heat-related health issues.
This forecast follows a month where the nation experienced its seventh driest and second hottest April in the past 65 years.
The nationwide average temperature for April reached 27.91 degrees Celsius, exceeding the long-term average of 24.54°C by 3.37°C.
Daytime temperatures were particularly concerning, with average maximums hitting 36.40°C, surpassing the normal average of 31.74°C by 4.66°C.
This resulted in the second-highest average daytime temperature for April in the last 65 years.
Rainfall in April was notably deficient, falling 59% below the typical amount, positioning it among the driest Aprils since 1960.
This substantial divergence underlines the increasing effects of climate change on the country’s atmospheric patterns.
These extreme conditions present significant challenges for agriculture, water supplies, and community well-being, particularly as the summer heat intensifies.
