PM Directs for Easier, Cheaper Digital Transactions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed officials to ensure that digital transactions are more affordable and convenient than using cash, aiming to encourage a cashless economic system across the country. This directive was given during a meeting focused on promoting a cashless economy.

The Prime Minister emphasized that advanced nations and thriving economies worldwide are increasingly adopting cashless systems as their preferred method of transaction.

According to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the PM has ordered the establishment of several committees:

  • Digital Payments Innovation and Adoption Committee
  • Digital Public Infrastructure Committee
  • Government Payments Committee

These specialized sub-committees will be responsible for developing proposals to enhance payment options between the public and businesses, promote awareness of digital platforms, activate the Pakistan Digital Authority, formulate a comprehensive national digital strategy, and streamline transactions between the government and the private sector.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of leveraging modern technological solutions to create a robust digital transaction and payment infrastructure.

Previously, the Prime Minister established a high-profile committee with the goal of accelerating the nation’s transition to a cashless economy and improving digital financial infrastructure.

The PM has stated that digitization is a primary reform priority for the government, designed to eliminate the informal economy and increase transparency through the use of digital payments and fund transfers.

“To foster a cashless economy, we are implementing policy measures to promote digital payments and money transfers,” he affirmed.

“The federal budget incorporates proposals intended to bolster this transition.”
