National Targeting System to Curb Tax Evasion

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a briefing on Tuesday regarding the introduction of a National Targeting System designed to combat sales tax evasion throughout Pakistan.

The prime minister presided over a meeting to review the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) operations and ongoing reform efforts. During the meeting, he learned that the new system would enable direct tracking of vehicles transporting goods via e-tags and digital devices, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

E-Bilty System and Digital Monitoring

An e-Bilty system is also being rolled out and will be linked to the FBR system. Furthermore, a digital monitoring infrastructure will be established at key entry points on major highways and in cities.

Aims of the Initiative

This initiative seeks to eliminate smuggling and sales tax evasion, reduce problems for law-abiding citizens, and expedite processes. The system is projected to promote the digitization of the economy and significantly boost revenue collection.

Customs Targeting System

The meeting also included information about the implementation of a Customs Targeting System at ports and airports, intended to automate the monitoring of import and export activities.

According to the statement, this system will employ artificial intelligence and integrate with both national and international databases to tackle smuggling and tax fraud effectively.

Crackdown on Mismanagement

The prime minister stressed the importance of taking firm action to address what he described as “70 years of mismanagement” within the tax system.

He affirmed that while honest taxpayers and businesses would receive maximum support, those engaging in tax evasion would face stringent legal consequences without exception.
