Piastri Secures Spanish Grand Prix Victory
BARCELONA: In a thrilling race, Oscar Piastri, the current leader in the Formula 1 championship, triumphed at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. He led a McLaren one-two finish, with teammate Lando Norris taking second place. Max Verstappen of Red Bull faced a late penalty due to a collision.
Verstappen’s team opted for hard tires, while his rivals utilized softs, leading to a collision with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and two separate incidents with George Russell of Mercedes.
Initially finishing fifth, Verstappen was later demoted to tenth place following a 10-second penalty for his second collision with Russell.
The Dutch driver was aggressively pursuing the leading McLaren drivers, employing a three-stop strategy in contrast to Norris and Piastri, who only stopped twice.
Verstappen initially seemed poised for a third-place finish until a safety car was deployed after Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes had to withdraw due to engine problems.
The four-time champion encountered a drop in pace and lost positions after Red Bull’s choice to equip Verstappen’s car with hard tires, contrasting with the soft rubber used by other teams.
Upon the race’s resumption, Verstappen struggled for grip, resulting in the aforementioned collisions. He and Leclerc were also investigated following the race for their collision, which could lead to further penalties.
Piastri, who surpassed Norris by 2.4 seconds to claim his fifth victory in nine races this season, previously finished third in Monaco last weekend.
The Australian driver shared his thoughts on his win, noting it as a positive rebound.
“It’s a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend,” Piastri commented.
Russell concluded the race in fourth position after being overtaken by Verstappen, while Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber secured fifth place.
Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari expressed his disappointment with sixth place, Isack Hadjar finished seventh for Racing Bulls, and Pierre Gasly of Alpine came in eighth. Fernando Alonso, racing on his home track, finished ninth, ahead of Verstappen.
