Piastri Vows to Adjust Braking Strategy After Penalty
Australian driver Oscar Piastri has acknowledged his error that led to a penalty at the British Grand Prix. He has stated that he intends to moderate his braking force when leading behind the Formula One safety car in the future.
Piastri, who was in the lead, incurred a 10-second penalty at Silverstone earlier this month. The penalty was due to inconsistent braking as the safety car prepared to leave the track.
This penalty not only deprived him of a potential victory, which was ultimately secured by his teammate Lando Norris, but also cost him the overall lead, reducing it by eight points at the season’s halfway mark.
Stewards determined that Piastri’s abrupt braking caused difficulties for Max Verstappen, who momentarily overtook him as a result.
Piastri mentioned that he had executed similar maneuvers in the past, as had other drivers. However, he now understands that such actions will be penalized by the stewards.
Piastri confirmed discussions with his team regarding the incident. While he expressed initial frustration following the race, he now accepts the potential for penalties.
“I reviewed the situation with the team afterward, and I believe there were valuable lessons learned on both sides,” Piastri stated.
“If this type of action warrants a penalty now, I accept that. I am aware of the standard moving forward, although I was understandably frustrated immediately after the race.”
Piastri further emphasized his commitment to avoiding similar incidents in the future.
“I will reduce my braking force next time. It’s that straightforward. Moreover, the threshold for what constitutes a penalty is now clearer, so I will simply adjust my braking accordingly,” Piastri concluded.
