PHF Sets Conditions for Pro Hockey League Participation

KARACHI: A key decision regarding participation in the Pro Hockey League was made on Wednesday by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). The PHF proposed to the government and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) that none of the funds allocated for the Pro League should be given directly to the federation.

PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid stated that the Pro League necessitates PKR 700 million, emphasizing that the federation doesn’t require direct financial assistance.

Instead, the Pakistan Sports Board is expected to handle the event fees directly for the Pro League.

Rana Mujahid noted, “The source of funds for the Pro League, whether from the Hockey Federation or the PSB, is secondary; the crucial aspect is the Pro League’s significance for Pakistan hockey.”

He also suggested that player allowances be directly disbursed to them, with the PSB managing all logistical arrangements, such as booking accommodations and international travel.

“Our singular goal is the betterment of the national sport and addressing issues faced by the players,” he asserted.

The PHF secretary further commented that participation in the Pro League would not only develop player capabilities but also elevate Pakistan’s position in global rankings.

Earlier in the week, PHF president Tariq Bugti revealed the federation had requested an extension from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) regarding the deadline to confirm the national team’s participation in the Pro League.

Following New Zealand’s withdrawal from the tournament despite their Nations Cup victory, the International Hockey Federation formally invited Pakistan’s men’s team to join the Pro League last month.

The PHF has until August 12 to communicate its final decision on the invitation to the international body.
