Ecopack Limited to Install 2 MW Solar System for Sustainable Energy

Ecopack Limited has revealed its intentions to install a 2-megawatt (MW) solar power system, marking a substantial move toward environmentally friendly energy practices.

The publicly traded firm, which specializes in producing and distributing Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles and preforms for the beverage and liquid packaging sectors, communicated this development in a notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday.

“The Board has sanctioned the CAPEX for procuring 3.63 acres of land and setting up a 2.03 MW solar energy generation facility,” the notification stated.

Ecopack Limited is a limited liability entity, established in Pakistan in accordance with the repealed Companies Ordinance of 1984.

Previously, Gharibwal Cement Limited successfully put into operation an additional 12.5MW solar power system at its facility.

Despite facing economic and societal difficulties as a developing nation, Pakistan is experiencing a green transition, quietly becoming a prominent global market for the expanding solar industry.

According to the Global Electricity Review 2025 by Ember, a UK-based energy research organization, Pakistan imported 17 gigawatts (GW) of solar panels in 2024, placing it among the leading countries in solar adoption.

This increasing pattern has prompted policymakers to consider its effects on the national grid and energy sector, particularly as electricity demand remains constant.

In response, the federal government announced its plan to levy an 18% sales tax on imported solar panels in its fiscal budget for 2025-26 on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb stated during his budget address to the National Assembly that the proposed tax would assist the growth of the domestic industry.

However, following discussions with relevant parties, the government opted to decrease the GST to 10%.

This advancement occurs amidst a solar surge in the nation, with net-metering capacity in Pakistan soaring to 2,813 megawatts (MW) as of March 31, 2025, based on the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25.
