Multan Sultans Face Contract Revocation Over PSL Violations
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a notice to the Multan Sultans franchise of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), citing breaches of multiple clauses within their decade-long agreement, according to sources.
Reports indicate that the franchise is at risk of having its contract terminated, and the owner could potentially face blacklisting if a satisfactory response is not provided.
Sources revealed that the PCB’s notice accuses the franchise of orchestrating a campaign aimed at diminishing the value of the cricket league ahead of its recent 10th edition. This action was perceived as an attempt to lower the franchise’s valuation for the upcoming decade.
An insider stated, “The PSL is a prominent brand in Pakistan. How can one undermine their own brand? The franchise voiced criticisms publicly but did not offer formal suggestions to the PCB.”
Moreover, the franchise is also accused of hindering the valuation process by not fully cooperating with the valuation firm.
“Such conduct from the franchise is unacceptable as the valuation nears its completion. The franchise reportedly delayed the process by not cooperating with the valuation company. The PCB’s notice detailed the violations of these contractual clauses.”
The controversy began earlier this year when Multan Sultans’ owner, Ali Tareen, questioned the selection of the venue for the player draft of the tournament’s 10th edition.
He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the choice of artist for the PSL 10 anthem, referring to the singer in a disparaging manner.
Tareen suggested the possibility of rebidding for Multan Sultans following the anniversary edition, rather than renewing the existing contract. He also challenged the PCB’s assertion that the 10th season was the ‘best ever’ for the league.
“How is PSL 10 supposedly bigger and better? Can someone clarify what these vague statements mean? What will make it the best PSL?” Tareen questioned.
“It’s the same games, same teams. We consistently have thrilling matches, but what distinguishes this edition? Even the stadiums are the same. Is this what will make it the best PSL ever? I am weary of these meaningless words,” he added.
