Pakistan Gears Up for First Test Against South Africa

LAHORE: Pakistan is prepared to compete against South Africa in the initial Test of their two-match series at Gaddafi Stadium, commencing this Sunday. The team has reportedly finalized its playing XI for the match.

Sources suggest that the team’s composition will likely include a pair of genuine fast bowlers along with two spin bowlers.

The projected batting order features Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq opening, followed by Shan Masood and captain Babar Azam to reinforce the top order.

Saud Shakeel, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha are anticipated to assume crucial roles in the middle order.

Sajid Khan and veteran Asif Afridi, aged 38, are strong contenders for selection in the spin bowling department, with interim head coach Azhar Mahmood allegedly advocating for Afridi’s Test debut.

Mahmood has been particularly impressed by Afridi’s command and stamina, having witnessed him deliver extended spells during net practice.

Among the fast bowlers, Shaheen Afridi is almost certain to spearhead the pace attack. The selection of the second pacer, either Noman Ali or Khurram Shehzad, is still under consideration.

Both Pakistan and South Africa are scheduled to practice at Gaddafi Stadium this afternoon as they intensify their preparations for the opening Test.

This series holds additional importance as it marks the commencement of Pakistan’s new World Test Championship (WTC) campaign and the return of international cricket to Faisalabad after a 17-year hiatus.

Following the first Test in Lahore, the second will take place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from October 20 to 24.

The series also represents South Africa’s first red-ball tour to Pakistan since January 2021, during which the hosts secured a 2-0 series victory.

Subsequent to the Tests, both teams will participate in a three-match T20I series from October 28 to November 1, succeeded by a three-match ODI series from November 4 to 8 in Faisalabad.

Likely XI For First South Africa Test: Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Afridi, Sajid Khan, Asif Afridi, Noman Ali/Khurram Shehzad.
