BYD to Introduce Shark 6 PHEV Pickup Truck in Pakistan

BYD Pakistan is preparing to launch its Shark 6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) on July 25, marking the introduction of the first PHEV in the pickup truck category in the country.

The company has yet to reveal the pricing for this vehicle. However, comparisons can be drawn with existing double cabin/pickup models that are conventionally fuel-powered, such as the Toyota Hilux Revo, ISUZU D-Max, and JAC T9 Hunter.

These gasoline or diesel-fueled vehicles are typically priced between Rs10 million and Rs20 million. The BYD product may have a higher cost relative to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

According to projections from Pakwheels.com, the expected price range is between Rs19 million and Rs20 million.

Experts suggest that the PHEV is anticipated to provide superior performance and features compared to fuel-driven vehicles.

Auto analyst Usman Ansari stated that there is limited user feedback available for BYD due to its relatively recent market presence.

He noted that the double cabin/pickup truck segment typically includes off-road vehicles (ORVs) designed for use on uneven terrain, in rural areas, and in mountainous regions, making them less ideal for urban environments.

Local Appeal

“They are popular locally due to their substantial size and perceived status,” Ansari added.

Previously, there was a perception that Chinese-made vehicles were not well-received in Pakistan. However, brands like Haval, BYD, and Changan have seen increased popularity because of their performance, appealing features, competitive pricing, and comfort.

Currently, BYD offers two models in the Pakistani market: the Atto 3, with an ex-factory price of Rs9 million, and the Seal, priced between Rs15 million and Rs17 million.

BYD globally debuted the Shark 6 on May 14, 2024, at an event in Mexico, where its price ranges from $50,000 to $60,000.

This launch represented BYD’s inaugural pickup model introduced internationally outside of China. Subsequently, the Shark 6 PHEV has been launched in several global markets, including Australia, Brazil, the Philippines, and South Africa.

According to BYD, the Shark 6 features a Hybrid Special 1.5-liter turbo high-power engine, which, combined with the BYD Blade battery, delivers 321kW of power and a maximum torque output of 650Nm. Features include Hill Hold Control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill Descent Control, and Auto-Hold.
