Hockey New Zealand Pulls Out of FIH Pro League Due to Financial Difficulties

KARACHI: Hockey New Zealand has officially withdrawn from the FIH Pro Hockey League, triggering inquiries regarding the open position in the competition, according to various reports.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) had given New Zealand until July 21 to confirm their involvement.

However, Hockey New Zealand informed the FIH about its choice to withdraw, citing financial limitations as the main factor.

Reports indicate that New Zealand has reduced its budget for the current Olympic cycle, which compelled the federation to make tough choices.

Previously, New Zealand had decided against sending its women’s squad to the Pro League due to similar financial constraints.

Following New Zealand’s withdrawal, the FIH is anticipated to extend the vacant position to Pakistan.

This development follows Pakistan’s second-place result in the FIH Nations Cup, making them the next qualified team for Pro League participation.

However, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has not yet received formal communication from the FIH.

PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid stated, “We have not yet been formally notified of New Zealand’s withdrawal. If the FIH gets in touch with us, they will probably give us some time to reach a decision.”

Mujahid also emphasized the financial difficulties involved.

He added, “Significant financing will be needed to participate in the Pro League, and we have already told the Pakistani government about the matter.”

If Pakistan likewise declines the offer owing to financial or logistical concerns, France may be explored as a backup team to fill the tournament’s open place.
