Pakistan’s Remittances Surge to Record $4.1 Billion in March 2025
According to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Monday, Pakistan witnessed a substantial inflow of remittances from overseas workers, reaching $4.1 billion in March 2025. This marks the first instance of crossing the $4 billion threshold.
Remittances demonstrated a noteworthy increase of 37% compared to the $2.95 billion recorded in the corresponding month of the preceding year. Furthermore, on a month-over-month basis, remittances exhibited a growth of 30%, climbing from $3.12 billion in February.
The cumulative remittance inflow for the period of Jul-Mar, FY25 totaled $28 billion, reflecting a significant surge of 33.2% compared to the $21.04 billion received during Jul-Mar, FY24.
These inflows from abroad are vital, bolstering the nation’s external financial position and boosting economic activities. They also supplement the financial resources available to households reliant on these funds.
Wagas Ghani, the Deputy Head of Research at JS Global, commented, “Pakistan’s remittances have achieved unprecedented levels, primarily driven by increasing confidence in the stability of the Pakistani Rupee, resulting from a reduced disparity between interbank and open market exchange rates.”
He attributed this stability to more stringent regulations governing foreign exchange. Ghani further noted, “In addition, a recent increase in immigration, notably to Gulf countries, has significantly contributed to the increased remittance inflows.”
However, some experts have cautioned that the current momentum of inflows might not be sustainable in the months ahead.
Sana Tawfik, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited, suggested, “It is unlikely that this level can be maintained, and it will likely normalize to around $3-3.2 billion.”
She also projected that Pakistan’s current account is poised to register a surplus of approximately $700-900 million in March because of these significant inflows.
