Pakistan Takes Control After Early Setback Against South Africa

LAHORE: In the first Test match against South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, Pakistan showcased resilience after an initial setback, with captain Shan Masood and opener Imam-ul-Haq steering the team to a dominant position during the morning session.

Pakistan, electing to bat, faced an early jolt when Abdullah Shafique was dismissed LBW by Kagiso Rabada on the innings’ third ball for a mere two runs.

Shan Masood responded assertively, launching a counter-attack with a series of boundaries against Rabada to alleviate the early pressure.

Imam-ul-Haq partnered with his captain, demonstrating composure and assurance, contributing to a solid 50-run partnership.

Imam, returning to Test cricket after a hiatus since 2023, celebrated his comeback by achieving his 10th Test half-century. The left-handed batsman appeared confident, exhibiting excellent timing and effectively rotating the strike.

The pair continued to build, achieving a century partnership and guiding Pakistan to 107-1 in 28 overs by lunch, thereby establishing control for the home side following the early stumble.

Kagiso Rabada was the only South African bowler to secure a wicket in the session.

Historically, South Africa holds a superior record against Pakistan in Test matches, having won 17 out of 30 encounters, while Pakistan has secured six victories, and seven matches have concluded in draws.
