Pakistan Champions Gear Up for WCL 2025 Opener Against England
BIRMINGHAM: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has voiced his strong belief in the Pakistan Champions team, asserting their determination to clinch the World Championship of Legends (WCL) title this year.
The second WCL edition is scheduled to commence on Friday, July 18, at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, with Pakistan Champions facing England Champions in the opening match.
This year, Mohammad Hafeez assumes the captaincy, succeeding Younis Khan, who guided Pakistan Champions to the final in the competition’s inaugural season.
Afridi, upon arriving at Edgbaston for a pre-match practice, conveyed his admiration for the team’s composition and capabilities.
“Once again, we possess a remarkable team. The combination is quite robust. We performed well in the first season last year, and this year, we anticipate winning the championship,” Afridi stated.
“This time, we have an influx of youthful talent, led by a new captain. Younis Khan did an excellent job last year; now, Hafeez is undertaking the responsibilities. The goal is to have a past legendary cricketer leading the Pakistan Champions team,” he further added.
The much-awaited contest between Pakistan Champions and their rivals India Champions, the defending champions, is slated for Sunday, July 20, also at Edgbaston. Afridi acknowledged the importance of this match.
“While all matches hold significance for us, the games between Pakistan and India always carry a unique atmosphere and excitement. I am optimistic that more fans will attend the stadiums to support us,” he remarked.
Team owner Kamil Khan conveyed his optimism prior to the tournament, stating the team’s resolve to advance further this time.
“We have arrived with renewed zeal and motivation for triumph. We have a formidable team, but the other teams in the tournament are also exceptional. We anticipate an improved second season of the WCL.
The competition has grown since last year, resulting in an increased fan base. The anticipation is high, and every match will be equally challenging, regardless of the opponent.”
Kamil highlighted the significance of having several all-rounders in the team, especially in English conditions. He also noted the opportunity the tournament offers for emerging players.
“We have seasoned players such as Imad Wasim, Asif Ali, Umar Amin, and our captain Hafeez, alongside stars like Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik. Considering the conditions and player fitness, it is a well-rounded team with numerous all-rounders.
We are also providing a platform for players who are still capable of representing Pakistan but, due to various reasons, are not currently under consideration by the PCB – such as Amir Yamin, who delivered an impressive performance in the first edition as well.”
Head coach Arshad Khan emphasized the team’s fitness and their continuous participation in competitive cricket.
“This year, we have an infusion of fresh talent in the team, including Asif Ali, Hafeez, Umar Amin, and Rumman Raees, along with seasoned players like Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, Sohaib Maqsood, and Amir Yamin.
Most of these players have been recently involved in club cricket, and some have even participated in domestic cricket. Even our senior players are completely fit and in excellent condition. We also have some practice time before the first game, which will aid us in overcoming any notable weaknesses.”
