Oliveira Calls Out Holloway After UFC Rio Victory
Charles Oliveira has challenged Max Holloway for a bout for the BMF title after his recent triumph at UFC Rio.
The former UFC lightweight champion made a strong statement by submitting Mateusz Gamrot with a rear-naked choke at 2:48 of the second round. The match was the main event at UFC Fight Night held at Farmasi Arena this Saturday.
Oliveira, who now boasts a 7-0 record in his hometown, has increased his record to a remarkable 17 UFC submission wins and has earned 20 performance bonus awards.
Fresh off his recovery from a knockout defeat against Ilia Topuria, Oliveira swiftly directed his attention to Holloway, the current “BMF” titleholder, suggesting a high-profile contest.
“Hey, Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway, BMF, let’s make that happen,” Oliveira stated in the post-fight interview.
Holloway quickly responded during his Kick stream, agreeing to Oliveira’s proposition.
“Why wouldn’t I be interested?” Holloway questioned.
“We’ve been discussing this fight. We share a history. He attributes [the initial fight] to some form of injury. I suppose we will resolve it now.”
Holloway’s previous fight saw him defeat Dustin Poirier, in what was Poirier’s final fight of his celebrated UFC journey.
The match concluded with Holloway winning by unanimous decision, with the judges scoring it 48-47, 49-46, and 49-46.
The fight featured a thrilling final exchange in the last 15 seconds, as Holloway and Poirier exchanged blows in the 5th Round.
Notably, both Oliveira and Holloway have suffered defeats against Topuria.
Oliveira was defeated by Topuria, the UFC lightweight champion, in just 147 seconds.
Holloway also experienced a knockout at the hands of ‘El Matador’ in the third round, which marked the first knockout loss of Holloway’s career.
