Oil Discovery at Chakar-1 Well in Sindh by OGDCL

Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a new oil discovery at the Chakar–1 exploratory well, situated in the Tando Allah Yar District of Sindh province. The notification was formally made to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).

The discovery was a collaborative effort with joint venture partner Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), which holds a 5% carried interest, as per the official notice.

Details of the Exploration

According to OGDCL’s statement, “Chakar–1 was initiated on June 02, 2025, as an exploratory venture under the Tando Allah Yar Exploration License. Drilling reached a total depth of 1,926 meters, penetrating the Upper Shale of the Lower Goru Formation.”

OGDCL indicated that Drill Stem Testing (DST) was conducted in the B-Sand, subsequent to the interpretation of wireline logs and Reservoir Evaluation Services (RES) log, followed by testing utilizing an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP).

Flow Rate and Pressure

The well achieved a flow rate of 275 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) through a 32/64“ choke, registering a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 400 psi.

“Furthermore, oil was identified in the Lower Ranikot formation during formation testing using RES. A subsequent DST/ESP is underway to thoroughly evaluate its hydrocarbon potential,” the company stated.

Implications of the Discovery

The company emphasized that this is the 13th discovery within the TAY E.L, highlighting the joint venture’s consistent commitment to evaluate and unlock the hydrocarbon resources of the block.

“The findings to date reinforce confidence in the geological potential of the region and support ongoing exploration and appraisal initiatives aimed at further defining its resource base.”

On June 12, OGDCL, together with Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), announced the successful discovery of natural gas and condensate reserves at the Faakir-1 exploratory well, also located in the Khairpur district of Sindh.

Last year, OGDCL reported the discovery of natural gas reserves at the Shahu-1 well in the Khairpur district of Sindh.
