OGDCL Announces Oil Discovery in Sindh

Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has reported a fresh oil discovery at the Chakar–1 exploratory well, situated in the Tando Allah Yar district of Sindh province. The announcement was conveyed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) through an official notice today.

The discovery was a collaborative effort with their joint venture partner, Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), which holds a 5% carried interest, as stated in the notification.

Details of the Discovery

According to OGDCL, the Chakar–1 well was initiated on June 2, 2025, as an exploratory venture under the Tando Allah Yar Exploration License. It reached a total depth of 1,926 meters, penetrating the Upper Shale of the Lower Goru Formation.

OGDCL indicated that following the interpretation of wireline logs and Reservoir Evaluation Services (RES) data, a Drill Stem Test (DST) was conducted in the B-Sand, succeeded by testing using an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP).

The well reportedly yielded 275 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) via a 32/64“ choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 400 psi.

Further Assessment Underway

The company further noted that during formation testing with RES, oil was identified in the Lower Ranikot formation. A subsequent DST/ESP is in progress to more accurately determine its hydrocarbon potential.

The company highlighted that this is the 13th discovery within the TAY E.L, underscoring the joint venture’s ongoing commitment to evaluate and tap into the block’s hydrocarbon reserves.

The findings thus far reinforce confidence in the geological prospects of the region and bolster continuous exploration and evaluation activities aimed at further delineating its resource base.

In related news, on June 12, OGDCL and GHPL jointly announced the successful discovery of natural gas and condensate reserves at the Faakir-1 exploratory well, also located in the Khairpur district of Sindh.

Last year, OGDCL also found natural gas reserves at the Shahu-1 well in the Khairpur district, Sindh.
