Show-Cause Notice Issued to Netball Federation by PSB Over Championship Claims

A celebratory moment for Pakistan has been overshadowed by controversy as the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has formally addressed concerns to the Pakistan Netball Federation (PNF) regarding potentially misleading statements.

The PSB has accused the PNF of misrepresenting the team’s achievements at the Asian Youth Netball Championship 2025 held in Jeonju, South Korea.

The directive, issued on July 13, demands a thorough written account from the PNF within three days. This action was prompted by claims that the Pakistan Youth Girls Team had achieved ‘1st Position’ in the championship. The PSB contends that this wording inaccurately suggests a gold medal victory in the entire tournament.

The PSB’s notice highlights concerns that a PNF communication dated July 9, along with media appearances by federation chairman Mudassar Razzaq Arain, created the impression of Pakistan securing the overall championship title.

The board emphasized that such assertions are not only deceptive but also appear to be aimed at securing financial rewards and recognition under the government’s reward program.

Championship Structure

The championship regulations stipulated that the eleven participating teams were divided into two groups based on their rankings. The top five teams competed in the Cup Division for the primary title, while the remaining six were placed in the Plate Division, which is the tournament’s second tier.

Pakistan achieved an undefeated record in the Plate Division, winning the final against Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, Maldives, and Saudi Arabia.

Some media outlets also erroneously reported this victory as a win in the main Asian Championship.

The PSB communication further noted a televised segment where Arain publicly expressed gratitude to senior government officials for acknowledging the team’s supposed gold medal performance. This, according to the PSB, amplifies concerns about the veracity of the federation’s statements.

The PNF’s original letter to the PSB referenced the team securing “1st Position in the Asian Youth Netball Championship 2025 (PD),” where ‘PD’ denoted Plate Division, the competition’s secondary tier.

Despite not participating in the top-tier event, Pakistan’s performance in the second tier, and subsequent qualification for the next edition’s top tier, highlights their potential.

Following the PSB’s notice, Mudassar Razzaq Arain released a video statement indicating a possible misunderstanding.

“I believe there’s a misunderstanding on PSB’s part. Pakistan won the Plate Division, remained unbeaten, and finished first in that group,” he stated.

He clarified that both Plate and Cup Division winners received accolades, and he praised the players’ efforts, emphasizing their dedication and significant achievement.

Arain also pointed out that the PNF did not receive any grants from the PSB for participation in the championship, which he suggested may have influenced the board’s response.

“I had mentioned this during a TV interview, perhaps that’s would’ve probably angered them,” he added.

He asserted that the federation only sought rewards in accordance with established policy and provided relevant documentation, including certificates, photographs, and congratulatory messages from high-ranking officials.

The PSB has warned that failure to provide an adequate response will result in the matter being referred to higher authorities for further action.
